I was flying Red 2 on a Bomber escort mission when we saw 3 Me 109’s.  Red Flight Leader lead the bounce.  I lost my flight leader in this combat, and began a circling turn to find a target.  Saw another P-51.  We teamed up together.  We fell behind a box of bombers from which position I saw a bogie coming 180o off to my left.  I turned onto his tail, identified him as an Me 109, and gave him a 3 second burst from 1200 yards, 10o deflection.  Saw strikes on his fuselage and a little smoke.  I ceased firing and started to close.  He cut throttle, I followed suit and lowered my flaps.  The E/A took no evasive action.  I fired a 1 second burst from slightly below the E/A, 75 yards.  E/A exploded before I could observe any specific strikes.  Pilot didn’t bail out.

I claim 1 Me109 Destroyed.

Historical Artifacts

We are looking for photos, documents and other types of artifacts including uniforms and gear of the 8th Air Force in World War II as well as other units and commands. Special Orders may contain transfers or other information. Flight records, accident reports, maintenance logs, after action reports, pilot encounter reports, diaries and biorgraphies; all of these types of documents help us support or mission: preserving your history!
