Combat. 13 April 1944, 83rd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group. 1310 hours. Beuchenbeuren. 4-6/10 cumulus at 2,000 with tops at 10,000 feet, good visibility. 2 FW 190's. 2 FW 190's destroyed. I was flying as Black Flight leader at 27,000 feet over a box of B-17's, when about ten FW 190's came in from underneath the Forts, pulled up to about 1,000 feet above them, did a wingover and went through at 6 o'clock on the bombers. I started down, but they were too far below to continue the chase. I had just pulled back up with the bombers, when four 190's attacked the bombers on the level. I started to pursue two 190's, but was cut out by another P-47. I chased one of these e/a down through a cloud and fired a short burst just before the e/a entered the cloud, but lost him when I went through, so I started back up to the bombers, when I saw a 190 flying underneath me on the deck at about 500 feet. I bounced him, he broke to the right and I fired with a 30-60 degree deflection shot and observed many hits. He then leveled out and I fired from about 150 yards, dead astern and observed many hits. The pilot bailed out at 900 feet. I then saw a 190 parked on what seemed to be an Oat field. I made two passes. On the first pass it started smoking and on the second pass it burst into flame.

14 April 1944 ALWIN M. JUCHHEIM 1st Lt., Air Corps, 83rd Fighter Squadron Supporting Statement of Claim: I was flying on Lt. Juchheim's wing when we bounced a FW 190. He dived on him and fired. I saw strikes all over him. Lt Juchheim hit him about five times, then the FW 190 pulled up and the pilot bailed out. The plane crashed in a nearby field and burned. We saw the pilot land on a nearby airdrome and also an e/a on it. We went down and strafed it. We strafed it twice, Lt Juchheim hitting it both times. The tail fell off and it started burning. This took place at about 1345. 14 April 1944. VINCENT J. MASSA, 2nd Lt., Air Corps, 83rd Fighter Squadron.
