i. I was flying No. 2 in Postgate White flight, (Major Burke, Lts. Robey, Patton and Smith). We made rendezvous with the bombers North of Nordhorn and we were flying on the right side of the first box of bombers. About three minutes after rendezvous, I saw twenty plus Me 109's coming 180° to the bombers and to our right at about 22,000 feet. As we turned to make an attack they made a 180° to their left. White lead, Major Burke, took one of the last Me 109's and opened fire at 400 yards. I saw strikes on it on the fuselage and it blew up. I opened fire on another Me 109 which was flying next to the one Major Burke shot down. I saw strikes on the wings, fuselage, canopy, and the belly tank blew up. The e/a burst into flames with black smoke trailing out. He went into a dive and disappeared into the clouds, still burning. After we broke escort with the bombers and were flying home, an Me 109 came from up sun and tried to position himself on the rear of Major Burke. I was flying about 500 yards behind him at approximately 22,000. I fired at the e/a at a 30° deflection and he broke away and went into a dive. I saw strikes as he broke away. I claim 1 Me 109 destroyed and 1 Me 109 damaged.

ARCHIE H. ROBEY, 2nd Lt., Air Corps. 2nd Lt. Archie H. Robey 42-7507 1496 Rds. AP & I. SUPPORTING STATEMENTS While flying Postgate Blue 4 to Lt. Schiltz, I saw one Me 109 blow up in front of Postgate White Leader, and a second later another Me 109 on its port wing burst into flame and went down with black smoke pouring out. I believe the P-47's were flown by Major Burke and Lt. Robey. WALTER R. FREDERICK, F/O., Air Corps.
