C. Maul Whippet White 3 a . Combat (air) b . 4 August, 1944 c . 6 1st Fighter Squadron , 56 th Fighter Group d . 1 3 45 e . 40 miles south of Hamburg f . 5/10 cumulus at 14,000' g . Me - 109 h . Me - 109 d estroyed (air) i . I was flying White 3 to Lt. Col. Schilling at about 24,000 ft. south of Hamburg when we sighted 2 Me-109's coming in at about 2 o'clock about the same level. We both saw each other at about the same time. The 109's started to dive for the clouds. They dove for about 7,000 ft., then one broke off to the left and pulled up. Col. Schilling followed the one that continued down. I delayed my attack and was above the one that pulled up. The 109 started to slice down on Col. Schilling but I was able to get to him before he had a chance. I was closing very fast and opened at about 300 yds. I observed strikes all over the plane. His wheels fell down and he went into a steep spiral. I last observed him at about 9,000 ft. spinning and burning, with flames visible from engine and cockpit. Historical Artifacts
We are looking for photos, documents and other types of artifacts including uniforms and gear of the 8th Air Force in World War II as well as other units and commands. We accept electronic/scans or originals of pictures and paper records. A General Order could be an award document that contains information on many servicemen. Special Orders may contain transfers or other information. Flight records, accident reports, maintenance logs, after action reports, pilot encounter reports, diaries and biorgraphies; all of these types of documents help us support or mission: preserving your history!
