PILOT’S PERSONAL ENCOUNTER REPORT

A.  Combat.

B.  16 April 1945.

C.  38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group.

D.  1600 Hours.

E.  U/I A/D near Landshut and U/I A/D near Ansbach.

F.  CAVU.

G.  2 He 111’s and 1 Me 109.

H.  2 He 111’s destroyed and 1 Me 109 damaged (Ground).

I.  I was flying White 4 on a bomber escort mission on 16 April 1945.  Because White 3 had a gas syphon we were forced to leave early.  We sighted an A/D near Landshut where I made 2 passes destroying 2 He 111’s (18, 19, see illustration 4) (Both on the west side of the field).  These passes were from west to east and the 1st He 111 started to burn after a 4 second burst and the 2nd He 111 exploded after a 4 second burst.  The flak became very intense so we left this area and went to an A/D near Ansbach.  This A/D had more flak on it then I’ve ever seen.  I made 2 passes on this A/D but didn’t get to fire my guns on the 2nd pass due to flak.  My 1st pass was almost a split-S.  I fired a 3 second burst on an Me 109 (20, see illustration 5) observing good strikes and claim this aircraft damaged.

J.  Ammunition Expended – 700 Rounds.

CLIFFORD C. GOULD, O-756546,

We need your help! We are looking for volunteers that can help us with the following tasks.

(1) Typing and Transcriptionists: One of our big projects is extracting data from the thousands of documents we have and putting this data into a database where we can display the information on a website such as this one. (2) Photography and Document Scanning.

Historical Artifacts

We are looking for photos, documents and other types of artifacts including uniforms and gear of the 8th Air Force in World War II as well as other units and commands. We accept electronic/scans or originals of pictures and paper records. A General Order could be an award document that contains information on many servicemen. Special Orders may contain transfers or other information. Flight records, accident reports, maintenance logs, after action reports, pilot encounter reports, diaries and biorgraphies; all of these types of documents help us support or mission: preserving your history!
