Donald Menegay

55th Fighter Group 04/16/1945

PILOT’S PERSONAL ENCOUNTER REPORT

A.  Combat.

B.  16 April 1945.

C.  38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group.

D.  1600 Hours.

E.  Autobahn between Munich/Brunnthal A/D and Munich/NeuBiberg A/D.

F.  CAVU.

G.  Ju 88.

H.  One Ju 88 destroyed (Ground).

I.  I was flying Hellcat Blue 3 when we started to go down on some planes dispersed along the autobahn north of Munich/Brunnthal A/D.  I made a pass at a plane in the woods and fired about 90 rounds when I saw that it had already been destroyed.  When I passed over that plane I saw one on the right that had not been hit but was very well camouflaged.  After that I made two more passes on the plane that had been destroyed but didn’t fire.

On the 4th pass I got lined up on the plane and fired 120 rounds at about 1400 feet in a 30 degree dive.  As I got in closed I fired another 180 rounds at 800 feet and saw the Ju 88 (27, see illustration 2) start to burn at the left wing root.  I therefore claim one Ju 88 destroyed.

J.  Ammunition Expended – 600 Rounds.

DONALD T. MENEGAY, O-721480,

We need your help! We are looking for volunteers that can help us with the following tasks.

Historical Artifacts

We are looking for photos, documents and other types of artifacts including uniforms and gear of the 8th Air Force in World War II as well as other units and commands. We accept electronic/scans or originals of pictures and paper records. A General Order could be an award document that contains information on many servicemen. Special Orders may contain transfers or other information. Flight records, accident reports, maintenance logs, after action reports, pilot encounter reports, diaries and biorgraphies; all of these types of documents help us support or mission: preserving your history!
