OFFICE OF THE INTELLIGENCE OFFICER 83 RD FIGHTER SQUADRON INTELLIGENCE COMBAT REPORT REFERENCE U.S.F.O. NO. 146
Combat 27 September, 1943. 83 rd Fighter Squadron, 78 th Fighter Group. 1010 Emden 8/10 middle cloud, 5/10 thin cirrus, visibility good. ME-109 1 ME-109 destroyed. I was flying Lockyear Red 3 in Major Davis' flight on a bomber escort mission to Emden. We were flying at about 27,000 feet in the target area, at 5 o'clock on the bombers. A flight of three ME-109's came under out flight, about 5,000 feet below, and we went down for a bounce. Red leader attacked the leading 109 and I took the one on the left. I attacked from line astern and fired a fairly long burst at 500 yards and saw hits on the tail section. I broke off the attack and pulled up to the left. I attacked again from the left at about 20 – 30 degrees, swinging into line astern at 250 to 300 yards, giving him a long burst. Saw strikes on both wing roots and the cockpit. The 109 began smoking. As I broke off to the right I saw fire in the right wing root and cockpit. The E/A then went spinning down and I lost sight of him.
