HEADQUARTERS
FOURTH FIGHTER GROUP
Intelligence Combat Report
FIELD ORDER NO 87
Pilot: 1st Lt. Frank R. Boyles
I was flying as Red one (10 covering the bombers from the rear and above when I saw two FW 190’s about 2,000 feet below and in front of me preparing to attack. I dove down in back of them, selected one of them and opened fire dead astern from about 400 yards closing to less than 50 yards when I had to pull up and away to keep from running into him. I saw the strikes of my bullets all over his wings and fuselage and after about a nine second burst my tracers started to go into him. They hit him with a brilliant flash followed by a puff of smoke, and as I pulled away he was smokeing (sic) badly from his engine. My No. two (2) man, Lt. Hupe saw flashes of strikes and a very bright explosion and flames right inside the cockpit and many strikes all over the aircraft.
A moment later, I was covering Red 3 who was busy firing at a pair of 190’s when I saw both wheels of the A/C come down. I started to fire at the leader of these two but ran out of ammunition. I make not claim for this second engagement.
I claim one FW 190 destroyed.
O. Ammunition Used: 1095 Rnds. .50 Cal A.P.I.
