HEADQUARTERS FOURTH FIGHTER GROUP A.P.O. 697 U.S. ARMY 17 August, 1943. Pilot's Personal Encounter Report 8 FG - FO 105 CONFIDENTIAL
A. Combat.

B. 16 August, 1943.

C. 335 Fighter Squadron.

D. 0920 hours.

E. 5 miles NW of Paris.

F. Very good.

G. FW 190.

H. One FW 190 Destroyed.

I. While flying as No. 2 Blue Section on escort to B-17's, about five miles northwest of Paris, we saw several FW 190's positioning themselves for attacks on the bombers from front and front. Blue leader dove down from 27,000 to 22,000 feet to attack the e/a. Following at about 125 yards, I witnessed Blue leader firing at this FW 190 which momentarily slowed and then pulled up into the attack, firing a full 8 second burst, closing in from a banking 15° turn astern at 250 yards to a full diving line astern at about 100 yards. I saw visible strikes on wing roots and cockpit, also intermittent streams of black smoke. The cockpit hood flew off and the e/a broke up in the air. It whipped into a violent inverted spin streaming smoke and disappeared from my view at about 5000 feet. This attack was witnessed by Capt. Young, Blue leader. I claim one FW 190 destroyed.
