"I was flying Red Two when we went down to attack two Fw 190's who were attacking the Liberators. Red Leader engaged the first in a Lufberry on the deck and I circled at 4,000', covering him and searching for the second e/a. I saw him on the deck, flying towards Red Leader so I attacked. As I did so, he saw me and broke away and I went after him. The Jerry was only a few feet above the deck as he headed towards a small town and his prop wash was kicking up a huge cloud of dust. He reefed the ship around a small group of trees and I lost him momentarily but, as I broke over them, I saw him directly ahead of me. I opened fire at 250/300 yds., and there was a large bunch of flashes around the cockpit and wing roots. The pilot jettisoned his canopy and started a chandelle, preparatory to baling out. As he did so, however, I gave him a slight deflection and, firing again, saw additional hits in the same area. The e/a stopped in its chandelle, kicked over to the right and crashed, exploding and scattering pieces all over. I completed my chandelle, barely missing a church steeple, and after clearing my tail, circled the spot before rejoining my flight. Shortly after, leaking oil caused my gun sight and instruments to go out, though, and I returned home. I claim o ne Fw 190 D estroye

d. " FREDERICK L. ROY , 2nd Lt . , Air Corps . "…I saw Red Leader circling with an Fw 190 down below while I kept my flight above as cover. After circling for a whi le I called for someone to go down and give Red Leader some assistance. Lt. Roy went down and attacked a second Fw 190, that was off to the side of the Lufberry, and destoyed him. The a/c was burning as it hit the ground and pieces were thrown all over….. " LEROY
