ME 109 1 ME 109 destroyed Narrative: I was flying White 3 on a withdrawal support for the bombers. We were on the way home in the area of Huesden at about 1230 hours, flying at about 25,000 ft when we saw the e/a coming in at 3 o'clock to us at 32,000 ft. We turned and climbed into them and they turned about ½ turn with us and then started down. We each started after different ones, but I saw one e/a pulling up on Lt Thornell's (White 4) tail, so I turned slightly and gave him a short burst from about 400 yds. I did not observe strikes but he rolled over and hit the deck. I gave him another short burst just before he went into the overcast. I pulled up from him and was gaining altitude when I saw another ME 109 about 2,000 ft under me—the e/a being at about 4,000 ft. I went down on him and gave him a good long burst with deflection of about 45 degrees. I got very good strikes on him from the engine back through the cockpit. I'm sure the pilot was dead for he took no evasive action. I last saw him spinning into the overcast at 4,000 ft. We came out without further incident until I was out over the channel where I found a B-17 with one engine out. I flew with him until he reached his home base safely. I then proceeded to my home base. I claim 1 ME 109 destroyed .
