H . 1 Me 109 destroyed . I . I was flying Wakeford Yellow #4 when our squadron withdrew from bombers at 1311. We turned and proceeded on course toward Bremen. At 1315 bandits were reported approaching at 1 o'clock to our course. Yellow flight peeled down to the right and started a bounce on 2 bunches of 20 plus Me 109's. Yellow #3 and myself continued right and down. Yellow #3 fired on 1 Me 109 and I saw it burn and crash into the ground. At this time we were about 16,000 feet. We continued down slightly as the E/A formation had split and the front bunch nosed down, but remained on their present course. Yellow #3 and I made another bounce on this bunch and I pulled in behind the extreme rear , left man, and started firing at 0 o deflection and about 250 yards range. No strikes were visible on the first burst of not more than one second. I decreased the range to about 200 yards and fired again, noting strikes on the tail and fuselage. At this moment the E/A nosed over and started down smoking and flaming. The strikes were concentrated on the lower fuselage from the tail to two-thirds of the way up to the nose. I then skidded to the right and pulled in behind another Me 109. I started firing at 0 o deflection and at about 200yds range. I did not observe any strikes on this attack. This E/A started a gentle chandelle to the left and I broke off the attack. Due to the fact that the formation of E/A broke up and started down, and we, Yellow #3 and myself, had no support, I pulled up with full throttle and rolled to the left. I then saw my first E/A dive into the ground. After breaking off we proceeded home at 18,000 feet. I c laim 1 Me 109 destroyed . I also wish this statement to be used in support of Lt Streit's claim.
