i.

Flying Yellow 1, we came out of bomber contrails at 29,000 feet looking for E/A that had been called in on R/T.  We saw 2 Me 109s split S and dive straight down into the clouds.  My wingman and I spiralled down through a cloud break to search for the E/A.  We pulled out 500 feet and went down to 100.  I caught no sight of the E/A.  Shortly we passed over a grass landing field and got some light flak.  I spotted a 109 50 feet below flying 180o to me on my right, 300 yards away.  I broke to the right and got on his tail 800 yards behind.  I closed a bit when he made a snap turn to right and crashed into the ground.  The A/C exploded and burned without my having fired my guns.

I claim 1 Me 109 Destroyed.

CONFIRMATION OF CLAIM

I was flying Capt. Webb’s wing when we hit the deck searching for E/A.  Just after we passed over a landing strip Capt. Webb got on the tail of a 109 about 50 feet off ground.  In taking evasive action the E/A snapped over and crashed into the ground.  I confirm Capt. Webb’s claim of a 109 Destroyed.

F. EDWARD LARKIN,
