GRANT TURLEY

78th Fighter Group 02/24/1944

A. Type of Action Combat B. Date 24 February, 1944 C. Unit 82nd Fighter Squadron D. Time of Attack 1230 hours E. Place of Attack Dummer Lake Area F. Weather Clear with slight ground haze G. Type of Target Me-109 H. Enemy Casualties One Me-109 destroyed. I. Account of Combat: I was leading Churchtime Yellow flight. After we had escorted the bombers to the vicinity of Dummer Lake I saw a lone P-47 at 16,000 ft. firing at an Me-109. I pulled over him and gave him cover until he quit firing and broke away, while the E/A was still taking evasive action. When I first saw this combat the P-47 (CV-W) was firing out of range from 500 to 600 yds. and did not get any closer. The E/A was trailing a thin stream of black smoke either from too much "coal" or strikes although I did not see the P-47 get any hits on him. After the P-47 stopped firing the E/A was still flying under full control so I went down and bounced him. After several short bursts I got in a three second burst from 150 yards, there were strikes all over the right wing, canopy and engine and a large amount of smoke came pouring out. The E/A then rolled over and the pilot baled out. I took picture of him in his chute--pictures only. I claim one Me-109 destroyed. GRANT M. TURLEY 2nd Lt., Air Corps.
