HARRY MILLER

352nd Fighter Group 02/20/1944

ENCOUNTER REPORT Combat . 20 February , 1944 . 328 th F ighte r Sq . 1 500. Blankenheim. Overcast at 4,000. ME 1 10. 1 ME 1 10 destroyed .
Narrative: I was flying Turndown White 2 position. As we approached the last box of bombers I called in a bandit who was making an attack on the bombers' rear elements. We were flying at 18,000 ft. and level with the bombers, so when the bandit broke away, he turned into us in a shallow dive. This put our flight up sun to the enemy. I then identified him as an ME 110. Seeing that my element leader, Lt. Col. Richmond, was going to overshoot, I turned inside of him, putting me on the e/a's tail. I began firing at 6-700 yds using 1 ½ rings deflection, observing many strikes on his tail section. Giving him more deflection, I continued firing observing strikes on his wing roots and both engine nacelles and in the cockpit area. I continued firing until I was within 100 yds of him observing many more strikes and seeing many pieces fly off of his a/c. Pulling up beside the e/a I noticed his right engine had stopped and his left engine was smoking and flaming. After passing him I pulled up sharply to regain some of my lost altitude. In doing this I noticed the e/a was in an uncontrollable spin dive and he disappeared in the clouds at 4,000 ft. The action took place between 10,000 and 5,000 ft. I then rejoined with my element leader who had followed me through during all this action. I claim 1 ME 1 10 destroyed .
