Headquarters Sixty Second Fighter Squadron AAF Station # 365 , APO 637 U.S. Army Personal Combat Report VIII Fighter Command F.O. No. 2 34 Combat
4 Feb . , 1944 62 nd Fighter Squadron Approx. 1 300 hours Vicinity Charleroi 9/10 cloud, tops 20,000' Fw 190 One Fw 190 claimed destroyed. "I was flying Blue Two and we had started home when Blue Leader spotted four Fw 190's flying East about 4/5,000' below us. He attacked, the e/a turned away and Blue Leader overshot him because of oil on his canopy. The others apparently saw us then for they turned and we all went into a Lufberry. Blue Leader got on an Fw's tail and then I got on the tail of another Fw that was on Blue Leader ' s tail. Giving him a 30? deflection, I opened fire at 350 yds but did not observe any strikes. Apparently I hit hi m, though, for he rolled over and went down in a vertical dive. I followed at 300 yds. I fired what I considered a short burst but, at 13,000' the e/a exploded with a huge flash. Pieces of the a/c flew back and one of them dented the leading edge of my left wing. The rem nants of the Fw 190 disappeared into the clouds at 12,000' and I did not observe any chute. I claim one Fw 190 d estroyed."
