" I was leading Groundhog Red Flight and we were at about the rendezvous time in the vicinity of Dummer Lake when my #3 man called in several e/a's coming up thru the clouds. After spotting approximately 40 e/a's we pr o ceeded to bounce them at 6,000'. As we came out of the sun, I picked out a 190 and opened fire at 500 yds., and held my trigger down while closing rapidly. The 190 kept flying straight, though the other e/a's broke down. I was then at 75 yds. and still firing observed many concentrated hits and big flashes all over the left wing root and cock pit. I fired until I was about 25 yds. from him and observed more strikes, then I was forced to pull up over him in a left turn. I looked back and the e/a did a slow turn to the left, rolled over on his back and started straight down in a lazy spiral. I lost sight of him as he spiraled out of control into the overcast at 4,000'. I feel confident that the Fw did not pull out of the spiral and that he crashed. The base of the overcast being at about 250/300 ft. Immediately after I pulled up, I spotted another 190 and came head on to him, opened fire at 75 yds., giving him one ring lead. I fired all my remaining ammunition at him and because the action took place at such an excessive speed, I was unable to observe the results of my fire, but know that I hit him as he took violent evasive action and broke for the deck. I claim O ne F w 190 D estroyed , and One Fw 190 Damaged ."
