I was leading Yellow Flight with the squadron at 19,000 feet when we sighted 15 plus 190’s, 2,000 feet below at 3 o’clock from us some 10 miles away about to bounce a bomber formation. White Leader made a climbing right turn out of the sun which put us right behind the E/A just as they bounced the bombers. I tailed one and gave a 5 second burst – 20o deflection – from 400 yards. He split S’d and started for the deck. I did the same and closed to 175 yards firing all the time. His canopy flew off and at 9,000 feet he bailed out.

We need your help! We are looking for volunteers that can help us with the following tasks.

We are looking for photos, documents and other types of artifacts including uniforms and gear of the 8th Air Force in World War II as well as other units and commands. We accept electronic/scans or originals of pictures and paper records. A General Order could be an award document that contains information on many servicemen. Special Orders may contain transfers or other information. Flight records, accident reports, maintenance logs, after action reports, pilot encounter reports, diaries and biorgraphies; all of these types of documents help us support or mission: preserving your history!
