ENCOUNTER REPORT LT JOHN H. WALKER A .
Combat B . 4 February 1944 C . 328th F i gh t e r Sq uadron D . 1 3 30 (Appx) E . Area of Hasselt F . 8-9 /10 at 15 000 , clear above that G . FW 190 H . 1 FW 190 DESTROYED – shared with Lt Schwenke, TD White 3 I . While flying Turndown White 4, on our way out, I saw a B-17 straggler under attack by 2 E/a. The B-17 was at 7 o'clock low to us. I made a right hand diving turn on toward the Bomber. At this time he was under attack by 3 FW 190's . The 3 E/a saw me coming and dove away. Singling out one I attacked, taking a short burst from 300 yds. Noticing a belly tank on the A/c I stopped firing and pulled up along side the ship and identified it beyond all doubt as a FW 190. At this time Lt Schwenke, TD White 3, who was flying my wing at this time, shot a burst at the E/a , The E/a then turned away from me and I took another burst seeing strikes. The E/a pulled up into a climb. I took another burst seeing many strikes and large pieces fell off the E/a. He then rolled to the right, jettisoned his canopy and bailed out. I saw his chute open. I then saw five chutes come from the B-17. I C laim 1 FW 190 D ESTROYED – shard with Lt Schwenke .
