One FW-190 d estroyed . I . a. Captain Joseph L. Thury , O- 435811 , 50 5 th F igh t e r Sq uadron . I was Upper Red Leader on the way home from an escort mission into Poland. In the vicinity of Stettin I dropped down to about 10,000 feet and noticed two bogies to my right and low. I dropped down to their altitude which was about 7,000 feet, and closed in behind them. I took the right one and my wingman the left. When in range I saw that they were 190's and we opened fire. They still had their belly tanks on at the time. I saw strikes on my 190 and pieces flying off; then he rolled over on his back and I followed, giving him another burst. The e/a caught fire and crashed into the ground. I saw the other FW-190 blow up as Lt. Starnes hit it with his first burst. No chutes were seen to open. I claim one FW-190 destroyed. JOSEPH L. THURY Captain, Air Corps, 505th Ftr . Sqdn .

Historical Artifacts
We are looking for photos, documents and other types of artifacts including uniforms and gear of the 8th Air Force in World War II as well as other units and commands. We accept electronic/scans or originals of pictures and paper records. A General Order could be an award document that contains information on many servicemen. Special Orders may contain transfers or other information. Flight records, accident reports, maintenance logs, after action reports, pilot encounter reports, diaries and biorgraphies; all of these types of documents help us support or mission: preserving your history!
