B. 20 FEBRUARY 1945

C. 55TH FIGHTER SQUADRON, 20TH FIGHTER GROUP

D. 1210 HOURS

E. NURNBURG AREA

F. O/C AT 6,000 FEET – CLEAR UNDERNEATH

G. ONE (1) ME 109

H. ONE (1) ME 109 DESTROYED

I.

   I WAS LEADING BLACK FLIGHT.  WE WERE AT 2,500 FEET

HEADED NORTH LOOKING FOR GROUND TARGETS.  MY WINGMAN SPOTTED A ME 109 HEADED 180 DEGREES TO US AND ABOUT THE SAME LEVEL.  I MADE A TURN TO THE LEFT AND SAW MY WINGMAN FIRING AT THE E/A, BUT DID NOT SEE ANY STRIKES.  WHEN MY WINGMAN PULLED AWAY FROM THE ME 109 I MOVED IN AND OPENED FIRE FROM 600 YARDS GIVING THE E/A A VERY LONG BURST.  I FIRST OBSERVED STRIKES ON THE LEFT WINGS SO I MOVED MY FIRE OVER TO THE RIGHT AND SAW STRIKES IN THE COCKPIT AND FUSELAGE.  I THEN OVERSHOT THE ME 109, PULLED UP, ROLLED AND SAW THE E/A HIT THE GROUND AND EXPLODE.

I CLAIM ONE (1) ME 109 DESTROYED.

       C O N F I R M A T I O N

 

     I WAS FLYING BLACK 2 AND SPOTTED THIS ME 109 THAT LT. MCNEEL DESTROYED.  I OPENED FIRE AT THE E/A, BUT MY GUNSIGHT WAS NOT WORKING AND I SAW NO STRIKES.  I PULLED AWAY FROM THE E/A AND SAW LT. MCNEEL OPEN FIRE ON THE ME 109.  I OBSERVED MANY STRIKES ON THE CANOPY AND FUSELAGE AND SAW THE ME 109 HIT THE GROUND AND EXPLODE.

We are looking for photos, documents and other types of artifacts including uniforms and gear of the 8th Air Force in World War II as well as other units and commands. We accept electronic/scans or originals of pictures and paper records. A General Order could be an award document that contains information on many servicemen. Special Orders may contain transfers or other information. Flight records, accident reports, maintenance logs, after action reports, pilot encounter reports, diaries and biorgraphies; all of these types of documents help us support or mission: preserving your history!
