353rd Fighter Group 09/27/1943

ENCOUNTER REPORT Combat 27 September, 1943 351st Fighter Squadron 1005 hours Southwest of Emden
High cirrus at 28,000 feet, 7/10 coverage. Cumulus lower. ME 109 One destroyed; one damaged. Narrative: I was leading the second flight of the 351st Fighter Squadron. As the bombers made a left turn towards the target I was above and slightly to the right and rear of the bombers. I then sighted approximately 12 ME 109s, about 2,000 feet above us at 3 o'clock, flying toward the bombers. I made a right turn, and then a left turn to get into position for an attack. My wingman and I rolled out behind 2 ME 109s. Taking the one on the left and to the rear, I opened fire at about 300 yards at a slight deflection, and closed to 200 yards dead astern, firing continuously. I noticed large pieces flying off the e/a, and smoke and flames coming out from the motor. As I pulled up I saw the e/a explode, roll off on his left wing, and head down in flames. My wingman, Lt. Perpente, also saw the e/a explode. Also, my element leader, Lt. Hunter, saw the e/a explode. I claim one destroyed. After pulling up I was then in a position to attack the second ME 109. Coming in to almost dead astern, I fired two short bursts, at about 300 yards, noticing strikes on the left wing and near the canopy. The e/a made a slight climb and rolled off on his right wing. I then lost sight of him. My wingman also fired on this e/a, but did not observe the results of his own firing. He did see smoke coming from the e/a, and saw the canopy fly off. I claim one damaged.
