(I)    I was leading 335 Blue section on Oct. 8, 1943 while escorting Forts to Bremen.  Col. Blakeslee sent my section to cover the top and rear of the first box of Forts.  We broke up a large formation of e/a (15-20) that was swinging around to the rear of our box.  After that I reported an e/a climbing up under us slightly behind.  It looked like he was getting in position to shoot at the rear end of the first box of bombers.  We wove back and forth over him until he got into the proper position which took about five minutes.  We were going East at the time.  I dove out of the sun on him from 26,000 feet and gave him a short burst starting firing approximately 600 yards with about 15o deflection closing to 250 yards.  I shot behind him.  I corrected my aim and gave him another burst.  I knocked his gun off his port wing and at this time I noticed he was carrying what looked like a large bomb hung under his fuselage, about the diameter of our 75 gal. belly tanks.

I continued to fire observing strikes on the port wing root, on the fuselage near the cockpit and on the belly on the port side.  My number 2, Lt. Riley had a hole out in the end of the left stabilizer and a cracked wind screen from the pieces that fell off the e/a.  When I hit him in the belly, black smoke streamed out.  He went into a violent right hand spin.  I watched it crash and my number 2, Lt. Riley watched it.  Lt. Ellington observed the strikes when I made my attack.
