h.  One (1) Me 109 DESTROYED

i.  The Group was on withdrawal support.  I was flying as Red Leader in the lead Squadron.  Yellow Leader called in nine con-trails at 12 o’clock high.  They came down on the Yellow Leader, who immediately identified them as 109s.  They continued in their dive toward the overcast.  I fired at one with 90o deflection, but couldn’t turn with him as I had too much speed.  I called my flight and asked someone else to take him.  The E/A finally straightened out and I closed in to about 200 yards and fired a three second burst with about 5o deflection.  I saw many strikes on fuselage and starboard wing root.  I recovered and observed the E/A diving straight down through a break in the overcast trailing smoke.  I followed him thru and saw him strike the ground and burst into flames.  My altitude then was about 7,000 ft.

I claim one Me 109 Destroyed.

Historical Artifacts

We are looking for photos, documents and other types of artifacts including uniforms and gear of the 8th Air Force in World War II as well as other units and commands. We accept electronic/scans or originals of pictures and paper records. A General Order could be an award document that contains information on many servicemen. Special Orders may contain transfers or other information. Flight records, accident reports, maintenance logs, after action reports, pilot encounter reports, diaries and biorgraphies; all of these types of documents help us support or mission: preserving your history!
