ENCOUNTER REPORT Combat December 20, 1 94 3 487 th Fighter Squadron 1 130 20 miles NW Oosterwolde at 22,000 ft. Visibility good. ME 109 One ME 109 dest royed .
Narrative: I was leading Crown Prince Yellow Flight; we had left the bombers and were returning. About 20 miles NW of Oosterwolde, I saw a lone B-17 up ahead. I started for it, then saw an ME 109 beneath me at 25,000 ft about 2 miles from the Fort. I closed rapidly on the e/a, so I chopped my throttle, pulled off to the right, and then fell in line astern. The e/a was evidently unaware of my proposed attack, for no evasive action was taken by its pilot. It was intent on positioning itself for an attack on the B-17. I closed and opened fire at about 200 yds and fired to 75 to 100 yds. I saw many strikes on the wings and fuselage of the e/a. It then rolled over to the left on its back, and went down. My attack was at 22,00 ft. I saw the plane going straight down and lost it at 18,000 ft. The plane was light blue. Claim: O ne ME 109 destroyed. J. C. After I finished my bounce on the first ME 109, I positioned myself above the Fort. l ooking for other e/a. I observed an ME 109 coming around in a port turn from the rear of the bomber, apparently getting ready for a starboard attack on the bomber. I started in pursuit of this e/a and was at about 700 yds. when I noticed that Crown Prince Yellow Leader making his attack on the same ME 109. I broke to the right and up, and watched this action. Yellow Leader was at about 200 yds. on the e/a's tail and was getting a great many strikes in the e/a's starboard wing and fuselage. As I watched the e/a it burst into flame around the engine cowling and on the underneath side of the fuselage. About this time, the e/a rolled, was apparently out of control, and went straight into the deck, where it exploded, sending up a huge cloud of black smoke. I corroborate the claim on one ME 109 destroyed, made by Yellow Leader. Serial # 42-8447; markings HO-S DONALD K. DILLING Capt. AC.
